2nd Gen Colt 1851/3rd Model Dragoon set
« on: May 14, 2015, 08:34:20 PM »

Here is a 2nd Generation Colt C series engraved and gold inlayed cased set.  The 1851 Navy is a model C1122 S2B and the 3rd Model Dragoon is a model C1770 S2B.  Each revolver is a 1 of 50.

Nice set, but I would have thought for a cased set like that better wood would have been in order. The 1851 Navy has a squareback TG, which would make it a replica of a 2nd model (the wedge being inserted on the left side of the barrel). Don't see many squareback 1851 Navies, even with repros. It would have been more impressive if the Dragoon was a 2nd Model with rectangular bolt stop slots and a squareback TG.

I'm just dreaming!  ;)

Here is my Pietta 1851 Navy steel .36, Colt 2nd Model repro:

Myself, I prefer the Third Model Dragoons. I have one, unfired, second generation third model Dragoon.

Me too.  I like a round guard and the square cylinder notches with the 'leads'.  Third Mod is my favorite of the Dragoon series.

sourdough - hey, that wood looks pretty good to me.  It appears oiled and not varnishy.  I like that look.

The wood grips on the set have figure, but look a little dry, actually unhandled. A little true oil on the grips would bring out the grain, and make the grips not look so dry.

However, the set really looks nice to me.
