Target/Plinking "Post & Boast"
« on: October 05, 2013, 12:33:25 AM »

Ok, everyone post up your best target shoot.

Shoot a group, take a picture, post up the picutre along with firearm used, powder type/load, projectile type/weight/etc, caps used, wads used, distance, etc.

Who knows, with enough response, maybe this can turn into a little friendly competition. A little "turkey shoot" never hurt no body.

Ok, lets get at it.

Free hand or rested? 15 yds? All 6 shots?

I'm not very good, but I enjoy shooting!

I'll try posting some old targets I kept...

This is my 15 yd freehand shoot. The top half is 240 grn Kaido bullets pushed by 30 grns of 3F Triple 7. The bottom half is .457" RB's pushed by both 30 and 35 grns of 3F T7.

This is 12 shots rested at 7 yds when I first shot my pistol. It's RB's and 30 grns Pyrodex P and an unknown amount of CoW filler. It measures 1.584".

This is 6 shots of 190 grn Lee conicals that fit my Ruger. They are also pushed by 30 grns of Pyrodex P and measures 2.042".

This was my very first target. I used 40 grns of Pyrodex RS and a ball, as well as 30 grns of Pyrodex P and unknown amount of CoW filler and ball. It's 18 shots fired at 7 yds freehand.

I never clean my pistol in-between cylinders. I just keep on going, though I may wipe the outside with a rag.

I measured the distance between the lines on the top target horizontally and they are 15/16". The others are just under an inch. I also used to use wads religiously, and they were used in the bottom three targets, but not the top target.

Sorry for the neck crank! I don't know how to fix that...

Ok, I figured I should contribute since I started this thing off!!!  ;D

All are from my Pietta 1858 New Army Target .44 cal. steel frame. All are from 15 yards with elbows and "meaty" part of the forearms resting on a table. No bench vises, gun rests, bag, etc.

1st is Hodgdon .454 round ball on 20gr of Hodgdon Triple 7 FFFg

2nd is Hodgdon .454 round ball on 23.5gr of Hodgdon Triple 7 FFFg

3rd is Hodgdon .454 round ball on 25gr of Hodgdon Triple 7 FFFg

A 4th cylinder was fired with .454 round ball on 23.5gr from 15yrds at a swinging 6" steel plate. All were hits within an approximately 2" group in the center of the plate.

This was a "maximum load with accuracy" test range outing. I would say that I've found my accuracy load as well as got the gun sighted a little better.

Next time will be from 25yrds and possibly 50yrds.

Also, I see a lot of guys shooting 40gr of this 50gr of that. Any chances groups will be more accurate at various powder volumes? Such as, my groups begin opening up at about 25gr. If I shoot 35gr what are the chances they would begin to tighten up? Just don't know how those guys are firing those loads with any kind of accuracy.

Keep Posting!!!

My loads are chosen with hunting in mind.

I've read that loads from ~18-28 grns seems to be the more accurate load in 1858's and 1860's, but that, for some reason, the Ruger doesn't seem to have quite the handicap of as poor of groupings when the charges become heavy. And the same goes for it grouping with conicals much better than most repros. I have heard that Ruger uses a .45 Colt barrel, and maybe that is why.

I would bet it has to do with rate of twist in the rifling. Faster needs higher rate of twist?

It's the opposite. Faster rounds need less twist. When a bullet leaves a 1:30" twist barrel, it spins much faster than 1:30". The faster you move the bullet, the faster it spins when it leaves the barrel.

Don't have a picture right now to prove it, but yesterday I shot a full cylinder from the Remmy with round all and 30grs of Triple 7 3F. At 25 yards the group was 4"x3 1/4". I think that's great!

Anyone else with target pics?

I recently used my Lee casting equipment and was able to replenish my pistol's RB count. I'm hoping to pull an all day event as I also restocked on 3F Olde Eynsford, and need to begin work finding an accurate hunting load for PRB's and see what these 320 grn REALs I got for it will do.

Hopefully I'll have more pics to share soon!

I shot this at the Nationals at Friendship about three years ago. I was about 67 at the time. This
is 10 shots at 50 yds. The rules say one hand hold un-supported. This was with my little .36
Remington. Yes it won 1st place.
