Metropolitan Police
« on: February 26, 2013, 06:20:17 PM »

Metropolitan Police copied from a Colt Model 1862 Police after the Colt Factory burned and Metropolitan thought they could fill a void in the market and avoid a lawsuit by Colt.

This one is serial numbered 2108 and is the first type with no markings other than serial numbers. Barrel length is 4-1/2 and caliber is .36.  About 2,750 of this type in two variations were made between 1864 and 1866.  Note how the loading lever is hinged through the lug it presumably was to avoid a Colt patent for the creeping type lever.  It would seem that after a little use that the screw between the two lever parts would raise a burr, making operation difficult.  This feature is about the only way to differentiate between the Colt and the Metropolitan.  This one is an unfired example

There is an article on the Metropolitan Arms Company of New York in the latest (June, 2013) issue of Arms Heritage Magazine online.

In 1967 Waldo Nutter wrote two articles on the Metropolitan which appeared in the Aug. & Sept. issues of Gun Report. Both of those issues are available on GunBroker.com.
